Type of program Small autonomous high school; California Partnership Academy

Description While founded more than a decade ago as an academy within a comprehensive high school, the Life Academy of Health and Bioscience transitioned into its own small autonomous school and building in 2001. The school’s career theme was identified after surveying students and finding that they had a strong interest in medical careers. The school now provides opportunities in the medical, mental health, biotechnology, and science fields to approximately 250 students in 9th–12th grade. The curriculum is designed to prepare students for admission to a UC/CSU and to give them a broad background in the health sciences.

Key Characteristics
  • The school’s technologically advanced science program allows students to perform DNA testing, computerized heart evaluations, and other complex tasks.
  • Students participate in internships with over 12 biotechnology companies, Oakland Children’s Hospital, and many mental health agencies.
  • The curriculum offers challenging projects and hands-on experiences in health and bioscience as well as in core academic areas. Teachers focus on the Demonstration of Mastery of High Priority Content Standards.
  • Students receive guidance from college counselors starting in 9th grade and continuing through graduation. Seniors are expected to present their future plans for financial security, college, and career.
  • In addition to a focus on science, the school strives to help students become passionate readers and writers who excel in all content areas.
  • At the end of the year, the school has a “post” session in which students take courses in outdoor pursuits, bicycling, dancing, self-defense, drama, documentary film, and photography.
