Founded with a planning grant in 1994, the Health Careers Academy currently serves approximately 150 high school students in grades 10–12 through academic and technical courses focused around the health professions. Students learn about the health, dental, mental health, or animal medicine professions in a multi-year program. Both academic and technical curricula focus on a common theme in the health professions. Laboratories and work-based learning opportunities provide students with hands-on learning opportunities. |

- The Academy offers a rigorous academic program that meets eligibility requirements for UC/CSU and also prepares students to enter technical programs or the workforce after high school.
- Courses within the Health Careers Academy are integrated thematically. Students might simultaneously study genetics in science class, develop a brochure instructing newly diagnosed patients about a genetic disorder, and read literature about a genetically engineered society in their English class.
- Work-based learning opportunities include field trips to healthcare facilities, classroom visits from local healthcare providers, as well as job shadowing and internships provided by 32 business partners.
- An Advisory Group consisting of 27 representatives from local agencies and the school district provide programmatic guidance to the Health Careers Academy.
