For many teachers and administrators, preparing students for college and career does not come naturally, because we teach as we were taught and recreate the structures and patterns of our own school experiences. Many teachers have not experienced integrated academic and technical instruction or contextual learning and teaching in their K–12, postsecondary, or teacher preparation programs. Giving students authentic learning opportunities also requires industry knowledge, which many educators do not possess. Professional development and training and teacher externships can fill these gaps, helping educators learn from professionals and experience first-hand the real-world applications of theoretical knowledge and academic understanding.
